RSA and Golden Square Create a Storm for KFC

Lionel Messi, the worlds No.1 footballer overcomes the secret ingredients of KFC chicken, in a 90 second commercial directed by Nick Livesey at RSA.

Bombarded by flaming peppercorns, engulfed by a spice tornado in the desert, he demonstrates his superb football skills through a 90 second visual feast, brought together by the VFX team at Golden Square Post.

Messi was only available to shoot for a few hours, so multiple camera setups were rehearsed using stand-ins, ready to shoot on his arrival. He was shot on green screen then composited into the created environment with tornado effects generated in Maya and additional spice elements were shot using the high speed Phantom camera and all put together in Flame by Harry Jarman.

Still and live action elements were combined to create a montage of visual treats. Buildings were placed into backgrounds in CG, a giant KFC flag was generated over crowd footage and flaming balls were tracked and composited in Flame onto a mixture of shots with CG generated peppercorns that rain down on Messi.

Golden Square also created a Kaleidoscopic Messi in flame to represent the many ingredients that go into KFC. This is followed by a montage combining Messi with various images to represent his passion for football and for KFC.

Lead Flame artist Harry Jarman said “ It was a real challenge to complete the work in the time we had but great working with Nick who had a clear idea and direction throughout of what he wanted which given the amount of work needed certainly helped!!”
